Lomilomi – Healing Touch
Lomi means to knead, to rub, or soothe; to work in and out. Lomilomi practitioners use the palms, forearms, fingers, knuckles, elbows, knees, feet, even sticks and stones. It can be done with oil or without. There are many Lomilomi practices which can change by family, Ahupua?a (land district) and Island.
Lomilomi is a healing practice because of its use of prayer. It is the prayer that takes this massage and bodywork practice into the realm of healing and connects us to the healing energy. Without the prayer, it would not be lomilomi, it would be massage. Lomilomi is first and foremost a spiritual practice, like all the cultural practices of our ancestors. It is the spirit that gives massage, the Spirit that receives massage, and the Spirit of Massage.
